Ok guys, good news. I've talked with Mike Foster and we are definitely a go on the 10th & 11th of January for this event. I know weather can be nasty but everyone wants trigger time and training so here we go. Jason, Josef, and I will be meeting with Mike and Mark tomorrow night to go over things more in depth and I will post more as it unfolds. Right now it's looking like Wilkerson Pass, up Hwy 24, past the Lake George area. Basically instead of taking a left at Divide and going up to Cripple Creek you would keep going straight for another 30 to 40 min. We will be going up Thursday morning to check things out and see how accessable roads are, snow levels, terrain, etc. There is also another possible site in the area of Guffey as a possible back up location, I'll post as soon as we have checked things out. Weather would be fairly cold and very cold at night so plan on bringing your cold weather gear, things can be very unpredictable in the mountains this time of year so be versatile. It may be possible to have some people coming from out of town stay in the Springs overnight Friday night and then head up early Saturday Morning, many of us live in the Springs and anyone willing to put someone up please let people know. I have already told Randy that the Grand Junction gang are welcome to stay with me, if they don't come I have room for about 3 in my place. In general I would encourage everyone to please be supportive, the idea is to get events off the ground. Once things get going we can work to rotate locations to make it easier on everyone living in other areas to attend. Wish us luck,

Dan

I got the directions to the AO from Neal. Apparently he got directions from Gene Pantano to this state land West of Guffey. The directions were kinda vague, so I'd like to get Gordo to do a quick recon if we are going to use that area. That way, we can at least get a topo map and make color copies for leaders, and establish safety procedures (panic azmuth, designated casevac points, etc) We can also bring up the Google Earth images for leaders' recon, etc.

"Rt9, 10-15 minutes west of Guffey. Go past the white buildings, farm houses/church on the right. On Left hand side up a hill, green gate says state land, RVing, camping, etc. Gate opens, road drops down to open pasture."

It may be a couple miles further than the Wilkie Pass AO, but it would be a fresh start and escape from a cookie-cutter regt. stuff.

Is somebody on the GI side working on a specific plan for no-fire zones, sector boundaries, etc? Do we need to create operation maps with graphics, phase lines, etc?

Tom, I will try and get more exact directions at the meeting tomorrow to the alternate site Neal talked to you about and will try and get more particulars about the whole event. Remember we are now playing catch up with this and it's the weekend after next, we'll know more after the meeting tomorrow night. Once we pick the location, would you be able to help with the Topo and Ops maps? I don't know much about that aspect of things. Any questions or concerns you or anyone would like addressed please just PM them to me so I can bring them up tomorrow I would appreciate it, every little bit helps alot. Thanks, Dan

Sure, I can do maps and graphics, will need scenario info, to be kept Eyes Only until the event. That's stuff I can do without hurting my back.

I got an updated Vicinity Grid to this other AO Neal went to recon.

Instead of turning Right, to Guffey at the Crossroad at Rd S and High Park Rd,, you turn left, onto High Park Rd, drive 1.5 miles down, look for the gate on the left.

Terrain is a ridge that crosses High Park Rd and protrudes out onto high alpine pastureland.
Lat: 38°45'18.82"N
Long: 105°16'52.27"W
Alt: 8023 ft ASL

We need 10 digit grid coordinates in order to redirect fire.
